Biography

Mercelite Pierre was born about 1800 in Louisiana.[1][2] Her parents were Jean Pierre and Marie Capuchins.

She married Honore Baham, son of René Baham and Therese Parent, on 24 November 1829 in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana. Witnesses were Pierre Melo, Rev. Philippe Borgna, and Rev. Bernard Permoli.[3]

They had the following known children:

  1. Ovide Baham, b. about 1830
  2. Teresa Baham, b. about 1832
  3. Lucille Baham, b. about 1835
  4. Joseph Baham, b. about 1838
  5. Mary Baham, b. about 1838

Mercelite and Honore were counted on the 1830 census in St. Tammany Parish.[4] They were enumerated there in 1850 with five children.[1]

She was probably widowed by 1860, when she was living in Covington, St. Tammany Parish, with her children Joseph and Mary and two younger children, George and David. Her husband was not present.[2]

Research Notes

The 1860 census shows two young children, George and David, living in the household. The early censuses didn't give relationships; since they are quite a bit younger than Mercelite's older children, it is not likely that they are children of her and Honore. However, it's very possible they could be grandchildren.

Note that a record of donation of 100 acres of land from "Mrs. Marcelite Manuel, widow of Nora Baham," to her grandson George Baham, was executed on 19 July 1879. The document was witnessed by Joseph H. Baham and Andrew (J. A.) Baham. It is filed at the Tangipahoa Parish courthouse in Amite, Louisiana.[5] Is this the same Marcelite, or someone else? This profile shows an unsourced alternate last name of Manuel -- is this where that came from? Is it possible she remarried after Honore died?
