Biography

See notes under her husband.

Marijtje was baptized on September 10 1673 in Enkhuizen with her twin brother Paulus. Her baptism witnesses were Meijnouw Freeks and Griet Volkers.

It was very difficult to find people who made sense to be Marijtje’s parents. Marijtje had only one child, Feijke, who didn’t seem to be named after anyone in the family (unless Feijke can be considered a variation of his father Feinte’s name). Fijke had only 2 children, both named after their grandfathers. This would mean that Marijtje’s parents’ and grandparents’ names weren’t used in naming any of Marijtje’s children or grandchildren. In addition, there were quite a few girls named Marijtje born to a Pieter in Enkhuizen at the right time for our Marijtie – probably an average of 2 – 4 a year. Between 1690 and 1700 alone there were 15 Marijtje Pieters who were married in Enkhuizen. So choosing just one couple where the father was named Pieter and the daughter Marijtje was like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Except for one more clue. Marijtje’s marriage record lists her as coming from Oude Rietdijk. Its more common spelling is Oude Rietdijk. In many cases, children tended either to inherit the house of their birth or live close to it. Which would mean that her father Pieter was probably from Oude Rietdijk when he was married too. There were 5 Pieters who were listed as being from Oude Rietdijk when they were married: Pieter Jansz Jongh & Dibberichjen Kornelis (1669), Pieter Jansz & Antje Lourens (1662), Pieter Adriaans & Marijtjen Jans (1663), Pieter Pouwels & Trijntjen Ottes (1672), Pieter Andrijsz & Vrouwtjen Maertens (1673), Pieter Jansz & Sijtjen Jans (1674). Of these, only Pieter Pouwels had a Marijtjen – on September 10 1673. And there was no Marijtje Pieters who had children named Pauwel or Otte in Enkhuizen between 1690 and 1720. Therefore Pieters Pouwels and Trijntjen Ottes are by far the best candidates to be the parents of our Marijtje.
