Biography

From a newspaper clipping of Nancy A. Jewett's obituary in my possession, source unknown:

Mrs. N. A. Jewett

Special to the Gazette. Monticello, Feb. 7 - The funeral service for Mrs. Nancy Amelia Jewett, the widow of Dewitt C. Jewett, was held Saturday at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Ed Hicks, on South Chestnut Street. Mrs. Jewett was ill but a short time, her death being due to the infirmities of old age. She was 86 years, 7 months, 17 days old.

Mrs. Jewett was born at Watertown, New York, in 1834. She was married at that place to Dewitt Jewett in 1855, and a few months later removed to Iowa. They made their home in a farm near Sand Spring, six miles north of Monticello, where they lived until the fall of 1883, when they removed to this city. Mr. Jewett died March 1901, and since that time Mrs. Jewett has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Hicks. When Mrs. Jewett came with her husband to Sand Spring, the railroad had not penetrated this part of the state; consequently they drove with a team from what is now East Dubuque. Mr. Jewett brought with him from Dubuque a load of lumber for a temporary house, which he built upon his newly acquired farm. This house he built himself, and also constructed the table and chairs with which they commenced housekeeping.

The services were conducted by the Rev. W. P. Ames, pastor of the Congregational church of this city, of which Mrs. Jewett had long been a member. Lyle and Lowell Hicks, of Detroit, and Frank Hicks, of Waterloo, grandsons, were here to attend the funeral.
