Little is known about Jane Pigge other than that she was probably born in Scotland (?Roxburghshire), she married James Paterson 1793-1874 at some point, and she emigrated to Upper Canada, most likely in 1820 with her husband and at least one child.
The whole Paterson family emigrated to Upper Canada -- the first came in 1818 and the rest came in 1820. There is some possibility that James and Jane came on their own through New York, while the rest of the family came up the St Lawrence River. Whatever the precise details, the Patersons settled in Scarborough Township in the Home District. That is all but James and Jane. For some reason they settled in Toronto Township just on the outskirts of the village of Streetsville which is on the Credit River. This is quite a distance from the others Paterson's (60 km by today's modern highways) and it is not known why they did not stay with the rest of the family.
Jane and James homesteaded near Streetsville in Toronto Township, Home District, Upper Canada. This would become Peel County in 1851 and, more recently, the city of Mississauga within the Region of Peel, Ontario, Canada. The farm was named "Bonnie Braes" and James was known as Laird of Bonnie Braes. Bonnie Braes was in Lot 4, Concession 5 of Toronto Township – this is the 100 acres immediately to the west of the first house built in Streetsville.
Jane died on November 13, 1849 at the age of 51 years and 5 months and is buried in the Streetsville Memorial Cemetery. After her death, James re-married and went on to have five more children.
Jane and James had the following children (it is believed that Andrew and James were twins and all but the first child were born in Upper Canada):
Mary Paterson c1819<1871
Thomas H. Paterson 1820-1860
Hannah Paterson c1824-1856
Margaret Paterson 1825-1885
William Goodfellow Paterson c1829-?
Andrew Paterson 1830-1899
James Paterson 1830-1873
Charles Robert Paterson c1834-1846
John Paterson 1839-?
Heber Paterson c1842-?
