“Ebenezer Pike was born in the Cape Colony, the last of four children to Ebenezer Pike, Snr. and Effie Bradfield. He was taken to the new Colony of Southern Rhodesia by his maternal uncle, Richard Bradfield who had set up some trading posts in the Native Reservations.
He was an adventurous young man, not afraid of tackling anything, having no fear of man or animal. On many occasions he encountered dangerous wild animals and hostile natives armed with spears and choppers but would talk his way out. He had a way with native languages, Xhosa, where he was born and Karanga where his Uncle traded, and Chizezuru where his Stowe Farm in the district of Marandellas was established.
Stowe Farm was on the boundary of the native reservation thus he had easy contact with the natives. The proximity between the farm and the reserve made it easy for him to get involved with many young native girls.
Ebenezer had a total of thirteen children, four boys and nine girls. These children were not born of one mother, there were five different mothers altogether.

Stowe Farm Stables became one of the most successful farms in the area and many major races in Marandellas and Salisbury were won by horses bred and trained at the farm.”
He died on December 28, 1939, at the age of 50 at Umtali (Mutare) hospital, two days after suffering a cardiac arrest at Stow Farm And just as the Second World War broke out. “Thus, was the end of an era and a very difficult time for all at Stowe Farm.”
Ebenezer Pike was farming at Stow Farm when he died, and by a strange twist of fate this Farm was purchased many years later by a friend of his great niece. Her name is Cathy Buckle (née Bishop) and her husband Ian Buckle. That Farm was overrun by War Veterans in 2000[1].
