Biography

Dad was the son of F. M. Pike & Lula Wall Dorn born in Yosemite. He was the 4th sibling of 12. Francis Marion was a tenant farmer and dag helped yje farm and hired out to other farmers at 10 cents an hour. He would walk to Liberty Ky and enjoy a movie when he could. I believe his Dad had a radio at home and never owned a TV.

Dad took an Electronics course after he got out of the army. I still have his sodering iron. He didn't have the patience to finish it though he only missed 2 days work in 31 years. Back in the 1940s and 50s a person could start with a company and retire from the same company. Today, unless you have a bureaucratic government/ union job, the employers and employees don't have the same bonds and loyalty and work ethic to each other.[1]

Preston lied about his age & joined the Army in June of 1940 and sworn in at Ft Knox in July. He served in North Africa & Italy. He made 2 landings. One at Oran, Algeria and the other at Salarno, Italy.[2] Dad doctored a birth Certificate of his brother Harold to enlist at the age of 16.[3]

Wounded south of Monte Casino and spent almost a year in the hospital in Naples. Morter or Artillery blast and a wall or building fell on him. Mom was still helping him pull scrapnelout of the back of his legs in the late 1950's. I didn't know that he had a plate in his head until he died.[4]

When he returned to the U.S. Dad was stationed at Camp Atterburberry in Brown County Ind. where he met my mother while he was on leave in Evansville Indiana & married her on Oct 3, 1945 in Cincinnati.[5]

I believe that Dad suffered from P.T.S.D from the war. His siblings noticed a big difference in him when he returned.[6] Mom's name was Zelma Ilene Healy and was from Norris City, White County, Illinois. & Evansville Indiana.[7]

He tried to work as a welder riveter in Illinois but it got on his nerves. Got a job at Hudepohl Brewery in 1946 and worked there until he became disabled in 1977.[8]

Dad was placed in Dunham City Hospital in Cincinati only anout a mile from where I live now. He was diagnosed with TB by the V.A. and was in the Isolation Ward for mutiple weaks until they found out that it was sand from North Africa. Mom and Dad's relatives, that lived in the Cincinnati area, had 2 or more picnics on the lawn outside which was the only visitation they were allowed during his stay. The hospital grounds are now a park.

He died of heart problems. SSN 401-24-8238. Issued in Kentucky. Dorn is stated as his mother's maiden name & Pike his father's name. His death was at 9:20 AM. All the kids were at Jewish hospital throughout the night. He was on a respirator since the day before & that morning the Neurologist stated Dad was brain dead & asked Mom & the kids to take him off. The doctor got consent & Dad breathed no more. Technicly he died the day before on the 16th. Dad was a stern father. He mellowed out in the 1980's with the younger 4 children. He died at Old Jewish Hospital Cincinnati Ohio.

Preston, Ilene, Kenneth & Betty were cremated. Betty's ashes were given to her boyfriend. Pike-2301 08:27, 15 July 2016 (EDT)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Preston by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Preston:

Not sure what's up with the sticker for Kentucky. It looks like it might be the Nonmigrating Ancestor sticker? The parameters for that sticker were revised a while back. See the Nonmigrating_Ancestor page for the latest instructions. The file name for the Kentucky flag is US_State_Flag_Images-20.png
