Biography

This profile is part of the Pike Name Study.

Thomas Pyke, son of Robert Pyke of Marton, and his (2nd) wife, Elizabeth Androwes, was born after 1541, probably in Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire.

Note: Marton (Marten) was in West Bedwyn (now Great Bedwyn) in the Diocese of Sarum, and County of Wiltshire.

Thomas was mentioned in his father's will:
24 September 1557 Will of Robert Pyke of Marton, Wiltshire (proved 20 November 1557) (Extract)

... I Robert Pyke of Marton ...
... Also I geve and bequeathe to everye one of my iiii yonger sonnes Edmund Willm Thomas and John seaven poundes a pece ...

He was also mentioned in his mother's will:
24 December 1558 Will of Elizabeth Pyke of Marten, West Bedwyn, Wiltshire, widow (proved 13 February 1558) (Extract)

... I Elizabeth Pyke widowe of Marten and in the parishe of West Bedwyn ...
... I give to Willm Pike the younger Thomas Pike adn John Pike my sonnes and to every of theym a bedd wt thappurtenncs and eche of theym fourtie pence ...

Because Thomas was under 18 years at the time of his mother's will (dated 1558) she requested that his brother, Edmund, be in charge of caring for Thomas, 2 brothers, and his sister, Bridgett:

... I will Edmunde Pike my sonne to be at the charges for and towardes bringing upp of his thre brothers and sister Briggett untill xviii yeares of age ...

Research Notes

Note: There are transcriptions of his father, Robert's will (with one or two minor errors) followed by his mother, Elizabeth's will. In Elizabeth's will it sounds like Robert had two sons by an earlier marriage ("my husband's sons William and Robert"), and there was also a William the younger which is her son. She also mentions her brother John Androwes. The three younger brothers and Bridgett were all under 18 in 1559. [1]

It is also worth noting the association of this family with the parish church of Tidcombe - both parents leave money to this church in their wills. (Tidcombe is only 5.3 miles from Great Bedwyn - on the road to Great Bedwyn, is a place named "Marten", just 1.6 miles from Tidcombe)
