Biography

This profile is part of the Pike Name Study.

Hugh Pike was born in 1686.

Note: No death or burial record has been found for Hugh. Some accounts give his death year as 1747 without evidence. He likely lived and died in the part of Haverhill that became Plaistow, NH, and he is likely buried in one of the ancient cemeteries there.

Note: Please Do not merge with Pike-204. This Hugh Pike is the son of Hugh Pike, b 1657. That profile is still being researched. Any help appreciated. Thanks. Robin Kabrich.

Hugh was the son of Hugh Pike and Sarah Brown of Newbury, Mass. He was born on 28 MAY 1686 at Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts, United States[1]

He married twice:

(1) Hannah KELLEY (b. Newbury 17 Nov 1686, d. 1715, the daughter of John Kelley and Sarah Knight) on 30 June 1714 at Newbury. [2]
(2) Hannah EMERSON on 24 Nov 1715 at Amesbury, Mass. (also recorded in Newbury), whose provenance remains in question.[3]
Note: Hugh's wife, Hannah, is NOT the daughter of Samuel Emerson and Judith Davis, as stated in many accounts of the family. Their daughter Hannah who was born in Haverhill in 1691 actually died young. Samuel and Judith then moved to Durham and then Dover, New Hampshire, where they had another daughter named Hannah, born 1699/1700 or thereabouts. This younger Hannah married Job Clements, and was uncomfortably young to marry Hugh Pike, anyway. The search for Hannah's parents continue, and though no one will like this, her mother may have been "Elizabeth Emerson, single woman" who had a few children in Haverhill about the time Hannah would have been born.

The children of Hugh, all births in Haverhill vital records:

with first wife, Hannah Kelley:
  • Hannah, b. 31 March 1715 (in both Newbury and Haverhill VR), d. Hampstead, NH 16 Feb 1805. The Haverhill record calls her the daughter of Hugh Pike and Hannah Emerson, but this is likely in error, as the published dates make no sense were this the case; she is almost certainly the daughter of Hugh Pike's first wife. Hannah m. Newbury 27 April 1736 Samuel BROWN, b. Newbury 2 July 1712, d. Hampstead, NH Oct 1786, aged 74, the son of James Brown and Rebecca Kelley of Newbury. They had seven children born 1737 to 1749.
with second wife, Hannah Emerson:
  • Mary, b. 6 April 1716, d. 1803, m. Haverhill 3 June 1736 Bartholomew HEATH
  • Solomon, b. 30 May 1717, d. Haverhill 20 Feb 1719/20
  • Sarah, b. 15 Jan 1718/9, d. Newton, NH 14 Oct 1794, m. Amesbury, Mass. 29 Sep 1737 Francis CHASE, b. Newbury 18 Aug 1715, d. Newton, NH 30 Aug 1806, the son of Samuel Chase and Hannah Emery. Sarah and Francis had 14 children, born 1738 to 1765, and are buried in the Francis Chase Cemetery in Newton, NH, both with extant grave markers.
  • Abigail, b. 23 March 1721, d. Bradford, NH April 1808, m. c. 1743 Annas CAMPBELL, b. Tyrone, Ulster Co., Ireland 1716, d. Henniker, NH 28 Jan 1772, son of Alexander and Janet Campbell. Annas is buried on his farm in Henniker, while Abigail is buried in the Bradford Center Cemetery, Bradford, NH.
  • Elizabeth, b. 14 July 1723, m. Haverhill 28 Nov 1745 Joseph DAVIS; no other records found.
  • James, b. 21 May 1725, d. Haverhill 1811, m. Haverhill 12 March 1746/7 Anne GEORGE, b. Haverhill 12 March 1728, living in 1811, the daughter of John Swaddock George and Alice Robinson. James's death record in Haverhill suggests that his wife was still living. James may have been the one of his name from Haverhill who served as a private in Capt Sawyer's company, Col Frye's regiment, that marched on the alarm of 19 April 1775. A James, Jr., likely his son, also served, or maybe both records pertain only to James Jr. James and Anne had seven children with births recorded in the Haverhill records. The oldest child was born in Newbury in 1747, and the last four children were born in Plaistow, NH (1752 to 1763) likely because James lived in the part of Haverhill that became Plaistow.
  • Moses, b. 20 Jan 1726/7, m. 14 Feb 1746/7 (in Plaistow, NH records) Naomi HARRIMAN, b. Haverhill 28 April 1729, the daughter of Abner Harriman and Sarah Merrill. Moses and Naomi apparently lived in the part of Haverhill that became Plaistow, NH around 1750, but sometime about 1765 they apparently moved to Bath, NH, located in Grafton Co. Web accounts give Naomi's death as 1766, and Moses as 1802. His name is on a plaque of those who served during the American Rev. War, located in Bath, but I have been unable to find his war record. Moses and Naomi had seven children, born 1748 to 1765.
  • Simeon, b. 20 June 1729
  • Solomon, b. 20 Jan 1731/2
  • Ruth, b. 20 May 1734

The last three children left no records, and may have died young.[4]
