Wagga Wagga Advertiser (NSW : 1875 - 1910) Tuesday 5 July 1904 p 2 Article Shocking Railway Fatality. A YOUNG MAN KILLED. (FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.) JUNEE, Monday. One of the local railway shunters made a shocking discovery shortly after 7 o'clock on Saturday morning last, when he found the dead body of a man lying, across the rails of the busiest and most dangerous part of the local railway yard. The body was cold when found, and the wheels of whatever kind of rolling stock had killed the unfortunate man passed over the chest, completely crushing the vital organs. The deceased proved to be Harold Pike, aged 19, second eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Pike, of William street, Junee. How the lad came to be passing along that part of the railway after dark is not known, but it is stated that he often came home that way from work. The accident took place near the railway wagon weigh-bridge, which is situated about 100 yards south of the local railway station. At this spot about 12 sets of rails run abreast, and as shunting operations are always being carried on about the time the accident is supposed to have taken place, it is carrying one's life in his hand to attempt to make the journey across this part of the railway in the dark. Deceased's parents are very well known in the district, and before coming to Junee resided at Pikedale. Mr. A. Scobie, coroner, held an inquiry to day, and the jury returned a verdict that Pike met his death from injuries acciden tally received. Deceased has been in the employ for many months past of Mr. A. G. Loveland, our local timber merchant. Much sympathy is expressed for the deceased's parents, who are naturally much concerned over their son's untimely end. The funeral took place this afternoon, and was very largely attended. Burial at the Old Junee Cem [5]
