Biography

Anna was born about 1851. She is the daughter of Herman Pietzsch and Christiana Zorga.

Anna Augusta was born in River Leigh near Geelong in 1851. However she and all her siblings born in Victoria were registered under the name of ZAHN. (My probable explanation for this is that It would appear that there may have been a language issue when filling out the forms . Anna's Father lists his mother's maiden name on his second marriage as being Tooth. Tooth translated into German is Zahn. )

  • 23 Aug 1892

  • 13 August 1899.

A Watch house was the local police station and each date signified a night in jail. There is a gap from 23 Aug 1892 to 29 July 1898 and it is probable that she was in prison during this gap, however will need confirmation of this. Also these records only cover the 19th century, it is likely that she may have spent more time in watch houses after the end of 1899.

The Public Records of Victoria website has digitized copied of their Alphabetical Index to the Central Register of female prisoners 1857 to 1948. Anna Augusta PASSINI is listed as a prisoner, although no dates or reasons are given, this is simply an index of names.

I have found a reference to an Anna Augusta PASSINI in the Victorian Police Gazette for 1898 as being released from prison. If she had been sent to prison, then that would certainly have been sufficent grounds for divorce.

James PASSINI filed for divorce in 1891 from Anna Augusta. Their daughter would only have been around nine at the time. On the 31 March 1907 I received the news that the Divorce file for PASSINI lodged in 1891 and held by the PROV is on their too fragile to even read list, so I am unlikely to be able to view it.
