Joseph was born in 1833. He told his wife and children who passed the story on to his grandchildren that he was born to a family named Pinkelman. When he was 15 the family immigrated to America but the ship sank in the harbor. He and two adult men climbed a mast and were the only ones saved. He said he was adopted by a family named Weber. When older he headed West. In his travels he met Mary Catherine Speckjohan. They married on May 22, 1871. They settled in East St. Louis, Illinois, where he worked as a cooper and had five children. He died of a heat stroke while working sometime during 1878, the same year his youngest child was born.
