Isaac Pitman is Notable.
Sir Isaac Pitman (1813-1897) was the son of Samuel Pitman & his wife Maria Davis
He was born in Naish's Yard, on the west side of Hill Street, Trowbridge on the 4th of January 1813.
In 1837 he developed the most widely used system of shorthand, known now as Pitman shorthand.
He married, firstly, Mary Holgate née Brown (widow of George Holgate) on the 5th of Jan. 1835 at Barton on Humber, Lincolnshire, England. She died d.s.p.'in 1857.
He married, secondly, Isabella Masters, daughter of Henry Masters, on 21 April 1861. They had two sons Ernest Pitman & Alfred Pitman.
He was created Knight Bachelor by Queen Victoria in the 1894 Birthday Honours.
He died aged aged 84 in 1897 at his home in Royal Crescent, Bath, Somerset.
