Another well Known and highly respected resident of Hamilton, in the person of Mr. Richard S. Pitman passed away on Wednesday afternoon after a somewhat lengthy illness at the age of 64 years. The late Mr. Pitman was born near Koroit in 1851 and the family subsequently moved to Macarthur, where the deceased was educated and resided until 25 years ago, when he came to Hamilton to take up the position of caretaker of the Hamilton racecourse. In that capacity he became well known to racegoers, and proved hlmself a valuable official, making many improvements to the grounds and keeping the whole property In such thorough order that, to-day the Hamilton racecourse is one of the best kept outside the metropolitan area. He was a thorough going sportsman, and was an especially strong supporter of football; and the gun club, of which he was a foundation member. It was only Iast year that his health precluded him taking an active part in the management of the club. The members appreciated his association with them so warmly that they elected him a life honorary member. An other organisation in which he took an active Interest was the North Hamllton school committee of which he was an invaluable member. The late Mr. Pitman was a great believer in industrial unionism and was a life member of the A.W.U. In his early days he was regarded as one of the best blade shearers in the district, and two years ago put up a good shearing tally at Skene. He leaves a wife, nine sons and three daughters to mourn their loss. Four brothers and three sisters survive him. The funeral yesterday was attended by a large number of people anxious to pay the last tribute of respect to the deceased, The Hamilton Racing Club sent a beautiful
wreath. . .
