Biography

Victor Albert was French-Canadian by birth and his surname was French: "Pitre". His father was Jean-Baptiste Pitre, born in 1849 in Canada-West (Ontario) of a French-Canadian family. His first wife, Jeanne Tinneau, married in Ontario, Canada, in 1903, was also French-Canadian. They had a son: Laurent Antoine Pitre (1904-1904) who died at or just after birth in 1904, apparently along with his mother. [1]

Victor Albert's family moved back and forth across the border between Ontario, Canada, and Michigan, USA. In 1900 he was recorded as "Albert Peters," 19 years old, born in Canada, but living with his parents in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, USA. The family adopted the Anglicized surname "Peters" that sounds closest to their French surname: "Pitre". [2]

After his 1903 marriage in Canada, Albert returned to Detroit, Michigan, in the United States. In 1909 he married an American-born woman of mixed English/French heritage. In Michigan he used the surname "Peters" on his WW I draft registration card. His American-born son, Ralph, born in Detroit in 1911, was called Ralph Peters. Victor Albert Pitre called himself "Albert Peters" on the Jan 1920 US Census in Detroit. [3]

Shortly after the January 1920 US Census, young Ralph Peters also died at around 9 years old. Victor Albert divorced Ralph's mother, Sadie Grifford, on April 8, 1921, in Michigan. [4] Three days later, on 11 April 1921, he remarried an English-born woman: Edith (Bee) Walker, in Macomb County, Michigan, USA. It was the 3rd marriage for both parties. They had no children together. [5]

Albert Victor continued to use the English surname "Peters" on the 1930 US Census, living with his 3rd wife: Edith Peters, in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, USA. [6]

This was the same bi-lingual, bi-cultural man. No records have been found for Albert Victor Peters after his 1942 WW II draft registration in Detroit, Michigan.
