Biography

Agnes Pitre (Peters) was born about 1846, the daughter of Lawrence Pitre and Margaret Fisher likely in Rollo Bay, Prince Edward Island, Canada.

According to The Descendants of Jean Pitre/Peters (a family lineage posted on The Island Register) Agnes was the fifth of nine daughters:

• Ann (b. 1839, d. 1887 in Rollo Bay, PEI)
• Lucy (b. bef 1839)
• Emily (b. bet 1841-1844 in Rollo Bay) md. Allan J MacDonald
• Lucy #2 (b. abt 1847)
• Agnes (b. abt 1851)
• Margaret Jane (b. 1851, d. 1924 in Rollo Bay) md. Gabriel Deagle, one son b. 1886
• Mary Ann (b. 1854, d. 1925) md. Larry MacDonald, one son
• Sarah Louisa )b. 1859 Rollo Bay, d. 1881 in IL) md. John Campion, 2 daughters
• Ellen (b. abt 1859) md Patrick Ledwell in Rollo Bay, 3 sons, 2 daughters.^[1].

The 1881 Census shows Agnes (age 30), her widowed father Lawrence (72, farmer), and three sisters Lucy (34), Mary Ann (27, teacher) and Ellen (22) living on Lot 44 in Kings County, Prince Edward Island. In the column Married or Widowed nothing is indicated for any of the girls, suggesting they were all single.^[2]

In the 1891 Census Agnes (age 44, single) is still living on Lot 44 with her father Lawrence (83, farmer), her married sister Ellen Ledwell (33) and Ellen's son Lawrence Ledwell (4).^[3]

Agnes passed away about 1891 at about 45 years of age. (source needed)

From her sister Mary Ann's obituary, 1925: "She (Mary Ann) leaves to mourn one sister Mrs. George Campion, Colorado. The following sisters predeceased her: Mrs. John Campbell, Bear River; Mrs. Allan McDonald, Little Pond; Mrs Gabriel Deagle, Rollo Bay; Mrs. Captain Ledwell, Vancouver, B.C.; Agnes at Rollo Bay; Lucy in Battle City Montana." - Charlottetown Guardian, pg 12 dated Sat June 13, 1925.^[4]

Research Notes

In absence of a source to support the year of death suggested above, I found an alternate theory in the 1921 Census where an Agnes Peters( age 72, single) is listed living with a nephew, his wife and large family in Tignish, Prince County, PEI.^[5] We know from her sister Mary Ann's obituary dated 1925 that Agnes pre-deceased Mary Ann.
