Joseph Wilfrid Pitre was born November 18, 1879 in Sainte-Philomene, Châteauguay, Quebec, Canada. He was the 13th of the couple's 14 children. His parents were Narcisse Pitre and his wife Philomène (Côté) Pitre. The family were of French Canadian origin and Roman Catholics. (See 1881 Census report).

Wilfrid Pitre married Valerie Trepanier in 1905 in Quebec, Canada. She was 3 years younger than he was; born in 1882-1883, also in Quebec. The couple lived in the Maisoneuve District of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. There, they had at least 2 daughters:
