Biography

According to Claude Pitre's deposition at Belle-Ile-en-Mer, the ancestor of the Pitres in Acadia was of Flemish origin. Nevertheless, Father Clarence d'Entremont was of the opnion that it was "more probable that he was English," in referring to "An Account of the Customs and Manners of the Micmakis and Maricheets"... (London 1758), p 105, "where it is said that Peters, a blacksmith from English... was of English origin."

Pitre can also be found at Peters, Pete, Peat and others.. RootsWeb: ACADIAN-CAJUN-L Re: Pitre and Terriot
