Biography

Francois Pouponne was the eldest of 10 children born at Prairie Ronde, an area of St. Landry parish and home to many other Pitres.[1]

He was 22 when he married his 2nd cousin Azelie Pitre, who was 5 years his junior. They married in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana. [2][3]

In the 1850 census they are newly married and he is listed as a Graser. [4]

On 1st February 1860 Francois Pouponne signed for 136.45 acres in St. Landry Parish and is found in the census owning $2500 worth of real estate, and $9100 personal estate. Along with his wife, 7 young children were listed, as well as 2 young men listed as stock handlers. Francois was listed as a farmer. [5]

Many of the Pitres seem to be missing from the 1870 census and Francois Pouponne is one I cannot locate. The family had now grown by four, though an early son had died.

By 1880, and the birth of 3 more children, Francois and Azelie are living with the youngest 7 children. His eldest son, also named Francois Pouponne has married Marie Louise Joubert, though she appears to have died around the time of the census. Eldest daughter Estelle is married to Artemon Lafleur. Arthur is married to Marie Amanda Prudhomme, and Azeline to Martin Fremont Dupre.

Both Francois Pouponne and Azelie died before the 1900 census (the 1890 was destroyed in a fire). Francois Pouponne died in June of 1892 and Azelie in December 1899. They were both buried in the Pitre family cemetery at Prairie Ronde, St. Landry Parish, LA. Six of their children are also buried there. [6]

Francois Pouponne Pitre's succession exists at the Opelousas Court House as #5196. It is one I have not yet acquired.
