Elijah Pittman was born in May 1858. He was a slave on a cotton plantation in Mississippi [1]. Directly after slavery was abolished, he started to preach as a "special pastor", travelling from church to church. While being a preacher he still worked the land and raised cotton for white plantation owners.
The 1900 census tells us that Elijah was born in Alabama, whilst Salvatore tells us that he was born in Mississippi.
