Ray Pittman was born on March 18, 1874 in Industry Township, McDonough County, Illinois. Industry is a small farm town located about 12 miles southeast of Macomb, Illinois. He was the son of Harrison Pittman and Mahala Rose. Ray had a troubled youth, in his teens he was arrested for arson along with one of his friends Barnett Standard. Ray was sent to a reformatory. Upon release Ray became a coal miner. He never married and had no children. According to information on the 1940 U.S. Census Ray graduated from the eighth grade and did not graduate from high school. He passed away on January 5, 1941 at the age of 66.
