Biography

Ellen Mercy Pitts was born about June 1857, in Parkman, Maine. She was the daughter of Elisha Pitts (1824-) and his wife Eliza Gilbert.[1]

In 1860, the family is living in Parkman, Maine.[2]

1860 Household Members Age
Elisha G Pitts 36
Eliza A Pitts 31

Nathaniel L Pitts 8
Emma B Pitts 5

Ellen's mother died before 1870. In 1870, the family is in Parkman.[3]

Household Role Sex Age Birthplace
Elisha Pitts Male 46 Maine
Wallace S Pitts Male 21 Maine
Nathaniel Pitts Male 18 Maine
Emma B Pitts Female 15 Maine
Ellen M Pitts Female 13 Maine
Mary Dunham Female 76 Maine

On 7 February 1887, in Lowell, Massachusetts, 29 year old Ella married 33 year old Albion Hover Whitten (1854-1910) in Lowell, Massachusetts. It was Albion's second marriage, and Ella's first.[4]

In the 1900 census, Albion (incorrectly indexed as "Albion T."), a carpenter, and "Ella M." were living in Lawrence, Massacchusetts. They have been married 24 years, which must be wrong, and had one child, who is still living. Ella's birth place and the birth places of both her parents are listed as Maine. Her birth date is given as June 1857 here.[5]

In the 1910 census, Albion Whitten and Bella were living in Lawrence, Massachusetts, with Bella's child through a previous marriage, Bertha Drew, 34, and her two children, Earl Drew, 15, and Chauncey Drew, 14.

In the 1940 census, the widowed "Ella Whitten" appears in the household of her grandson Earl Drew in Lawrence, Mass. Her age is listed as 82, which would put her birth year as about 1858. [6]

Research Notes

Her name is probably Ella, not Bella. It may only appear as Bella on the 1910 census. She appears as Ella everywhere else.

She is not the Ella J. Pitts that married Lyman Pitts. Their dates and locations are close, but this Ella and Lyman were married at the time of the 1880, 1900, and 1910 census.

I've located the marriage record for Albion H. Whitten and Ella M. Pitts, which states her father is Elisha G. Pitts. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NWT9-C6Q?treeref=KFR3-FRD

Could you change her LNAB to Pitts? Thanks, Kathy
