Biography
The Abbess of Barking enjoyed precedence over all other abbesses, ranking as a baron ex-officio. Henry II appointed his daughter, another Maud, in 1175 after the death of Mary Socket, whom he had been persuaded to appoint to the office after her brother's martyrdom. [1]
