Biography
William was born about 1572, probably in London. On 19 July 1596, he married Margerie Smith at Saint Botolph's Aldgate, London, Middlesex.[1] She died 4 August 1618 and was buried in St. Botolph's Aldgate.[2]
William, whose surname is variously spelled as Plasse, Place, or Playce, is named as the father in the christening or burial records of four children, all christened or buried at St. Botolph's Aldgate:
Marie Plasse ("Marye Place"), christened 5 June 1597;[3] buried 4 August 1601[4]
Ruth ("Rvthe") Plasse, christened 25 December 1603[6]
Nathaniel Plasse ("Nathanyell Place"), buried 13 July 1607[7]
On February 8, 1618/9, William Plasse widower and gunmaker of London, published his intention to marry Phebe Waters, widow of James Waters. They were married on February 23rd. [8][9]
The family emigrated to New England by 1637, when the town of Salem, Massachusetts, granted William the house with 1/2 acre of land, formerly of Mr. Conant. [8]
William Plasse died at Salem by April 15, 1646. [9] His estate was inventoried on that date. [10]
Research Notes
Great Migration Directory: Plasse, William: London; 1637; Salem [STR 1:50; EQC 1:108; EPR 1:49; EIHC 28:88; Waters 1334-35, 1340-43].
I could find no christening record for a Joyce or Rejoice Plasse or Place belonging to this family. A Joyce Place christened 4 December 1608 in Boughton under Blean, Kent, England, can't be the Joyce who married Richard Waters as she died 15 September 1612,[11]Carol (Jennings) Thoma, 27 August 2023
