Richard Platts was born on the 10th June 1803 in West Leake, Nottinghamshire, England and baptised on 12th April 1807 at the Anglican church of St. Helena in West Leake. He was the son of John Platts and his wife, Jane Sharp. [1][2]
Richard was a wheelwright by trade. On 13th November 1826 at age 23, he voluntarily enlisted himself for and was initially a private in the Grenadier Regt Of Foot Guards commanded by H.R.H. the Duke of York. The bounty for enlistment was five pounds and ten shillings.
Storer Eddowes, surgeon examined him and found him fit on 15th November. Richard was described as having a fair complection, dark eyes, brown hair and was five feet nine inches tall.
Richard was sworn in at Loughborough before Sgt. James Grant on 16th November and fifteen pounds was paid to him on being attested. John Dudley, magistrate signed the attestation.
Richard (service number 1512) was medically discharged from service, in London on 28th August 1845, having served 18years and 289 days on home soil. The reason for discharge was disability. Richard was suffering from paralysis for which he had received two months' treatment and it was recorded that there was no chance of recovery. It was noted that his character and conduct had been very good throughout his service.
Richard had been a Private for 6 years 332 days before being promoted to Corporal on 11 October 1833. He then served a further 4 years 172 days before being promoted to Sergeant on 1st April 1838. He had served 7 years 150 days as Sergeant up to 28th August 1845. Further service is recorded from 29th August to 9th September 1845, the date of final discharge. The paperwork at the time of discharge states he had served a total of 18 years 301 days. [3][4]
His Army pension commenced 1st October 1845. [5][6][7]
Richard died at age 45 on 10th July 1850, according to army pension records. [8] However we know he was born on 10th June 1803, so should be 47 if he died in 1850.
