George was the son of Eliza, who was widowed according to the 1880 US Census. He was listed as being a field hand. He had one sister listed, Elizabeth, who at age 6 was also a field hand.
He married Anna M. Hicks and they had 9 children. Their sixth child, daughter Amelia, would become a pivotal figure in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.
