Biography

Flag of Leicestershire (adopted 2021)
Thomas Platts was born in Leicestershire, England.

Thomas Plats/Platts was born in about 1767 and christened on 1st January 1768 in Newtown Linford, Leicestershire, England. He was the son of William Platts and his wife, Mary Smithers. [1] [2]

There was a warrant issued on 25th January 1800 by J. Freer, coroner, permitting the burial of the body of one Robert Smithard "who casually and by misfortune was killed in the Works of a Water Mill of Thomas Platts in Ulverscroft." held by Leicestershire Records Office. [3]

Thomas Platts of Newtown Linford married Phebe Wheatley of the liberty of Ulverscroft on 03 Aug 1800 in Newtown Linford, Leicester, England. Witnesses were Hannah Flint and Richard Hincks, his brother in law. [4]

In 1832, Thomas Platts was the tenant of Mill Farm, Ulverscroft, in the Parish of Newtown Linford, Leicestershire. [5]

In 1841, Thomas Platts was the occupier of Newtown Mill, Mill Farm, Newtown Linford. [6]

in 1851, Thomas Platts (83, widower, born in Newtown Linford, Leicestershire) was described as a miller and grazier of 42 acres. Servant, Thomas Topley (47, married, born in Mountsorrel, Leicestershire) was also in the household in Ulverscroft, Leicestershire, England, United Kingdom. [7][8]

A William Platts of Ulverscroft was listed as a tenant on a Suit Roll for the Manor of Ulverscroft by Henry Whatton esq., the steward to Mr. John Walker, bailiff, on 2nd March 1797. It names William Platts as a juror at a Court Leet and Court Baron to be held by William Parkin Bosville esq. on 2nd May 1797. This William Platts may be Thomas's father or brother. [9]

We also know the miller of nearby Newtown Linford was a William Platts, whose mill once occupied the same spot that is now known as "Old John" in Bradgate park, until it was destroyed - probably in the summer storms of 1784. William Platts built his next windmill on Lint Hill in Newtown Linford in 1789. [10]

Thomas died age 85 and was buried on 13 November 1853 in Newtown Linford, Leicestershire, England, United Kingdom. [11]
