George Platts was the son of William Brooks Platts, a farmer, and his wife, Ellen. George was baptised on 12th April 1829 in South Wingfield, Derbyshire, England, United Kingdom. [1][2]
George's mother died in 1837 and his father in 1838, making him an orphan.
In 1841, George (10) was living in the care of his eldest sibling, Matthew Platts (20, farmer), along with their other siblings, Samuel (15), Mary (8) and Ellen (5) in South Wingfield, Derbyshire. [3]
George Platts was married to Sarah Jane Sellors (b 1826), daughter of Thomas Sellors in 1852 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England, United Kingdom. [4][5][6]
In 1861, George (32) was a linen and woolen draper as well as farming 4 acres of land. He and Sarah (36, born in crich, Derbyshire) had three children, Ann Ellen (age 6), William (5) and Samuel (1). They were living in in South Wingfield, next door to George's brother, grocer and farmer, Samuel Platts (39), his wife, Sarah (28) and their newborn daughter, Mary Margaret, (less than 1 month old). In 1871 George (a farmer of 42 acres) and Sarah (48) and their four children, Ann Ellen (16), William (14), Samuel (11) and Phoebe (7). were living in Church Lane, South Wingfield, Derbyshire. [8]
By 1881, George (52, farmer of 44 acres, employing 1 lab.) and Sarah (58) had just the one child - daughter Phoebe (17) - still at home in Hill Top, South Wingfield, Belper, Derbyshire. [9]
in 1891, George Platts (62, a farmer) and Sarah (67) were living in Park Head, Crich, Belper District, Derbyshire. [10]
In 1901, George Platts (72, a farmer) and Sarah (78) were still living in Park Head, Crich, Belper District, Derbyshire. Mary Wigley (53, born in Wessington, Derbyshire) was visiting. [11]
George's wife, Sarah died in 1906 age 84 years. [12][13]
There was no census entry for George in 1911.
George Platts died on 29 March 1911 in Axbridge, Somerset and was buried in St. Michael Sanatorium Cemetery, Axbridge. Note that the entry at Findagrave has his parents and baptism date/place incorrect. They have conflated two different George Platts's, born within a couple of years of each other. The other George died in 1860. [14][15]
