John was born in 1846 on a farm near his home in Toronto. He was the son of Richard Playter and Mary Lea. He married Mary Jane Jackman in 1875.[1] They had three children, Edith Matilda, Pearl and Gordon.[2]
At the time of his death in 1923 at 1 Jackman Avenue, Toronto, he was a "retired gentleman", his occupation given as "farmer".[3] He was buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto.[4]
