John Wesley Pleasant

Birth

31 OCT 1874 Chariton Co., MO(north central MO).

One of his grandfathers was said to be an Indian; John had high cheekbones and other Indian features.

Census

1900 Douglas Co., MO Census - John appears with his first-cousin J.W. LEATHERS (John's and J.W.'s mothers were sisters, maiden name Whitaker).

Aug 1903 - John married Ethel LEATHERS (daughter of J.W.'s sister Sarah Frances). John was 28 and Ethel was 20.

1904 - John & Ethel had their first child, Nellie.

Sometime between 1905-1910 - John & family moved to John's hometown in Chariton Co. Either this trip, or the later trip west to Oklahoma/Kansas in the 1910s, was in a covered wagon. Nellie remembered that when she was a little girl the family moved via covered wagon.

1910 census: MO, Chariton Co., Bee Branch (ED 26, sheet 1)

Between 1911-14 the family moved to Okla., then on to KS by 1920.

In 1914 they lived in Oklahoma, where Marie was born.

1920 census: KS, Pratt Co., Lincoln Twp., p. 69

1930 census: KS, Pratt Co., Iuka Twp. p. 222

They rented farmland in Kansas, and over the years they lived on 3 different farms in north & south Pratt County and south Stafford County. They always struggled financially, never owning any land. In their later years they lived in town in Iuka.

10 DEC 1955 - John died in Iuka, Pratt Co., KS
