Note: 1906: A Burlington, Vt.,.dispatch of Nov. 15, 1906, says: "An extraordinary suit brought by Sylvester Ploof, of this city, against H. W. Putnam, of New York, in which the former claims damages of $3,000 for the loss of his sloop and cargo on Lake Champlain and the imperiling of the lives of the crew and passengers, was filed today in the county "clerk's office. In November, 1904, Ploof claims that Putnam owned an island of 40 acres in the lake, the caretaker of which was Albert Williams, and who was in Mr. Putnam's employ. On November 13 of that year Ploof claims he set sail in his sloop from Ball's Island, Ferrisburg, for Essex, having on board his wife and two sons and Mr. and Mrs, George Root and their son, their furniture and many barrels of apples, flour and other provisions. Toward night, driven by a squall, the sloop was steered toward the Putnam wharf, to which it was made fast by a hawser. Mr. Ploof claims that Williams came down and maliciously cast the hawser off, although warned not to do so. The sloop was consequently driven before the terrific wind and was finally cast upon the rocks of the island, the people aboard being thrown into the water and. nearly drowned. The sloop, he alleges, was totally wrecked and he and his family deprived of their home.". [9] Some are reporting the death of Sylvester in 1922 but it cannot be the case since Sylvester was enumerated at the 1925 census with wife Ellen. [6]
