Biography

Frederick Harold Plowright was born in 1881. He was adopted by John and Margaret Plowright.[1] No birth record has been found for the infant.

In July 1881 in Avoca Elizabeth Ann Cooke brought an affiliation case against James Henry Plowright. An affiliation case is legal proceedings, usually initiated by an unwed mother, claiming legal recognition that a particular man is the father of her child, often associated with a claim for financial support. The Avoca Mail newspaper reported:

AVOCA POLICE COURT. Monday, June 28th, 1881. (Before C. W. Carr, Esq., P.M.)
Elizabeth Ann Cooke v. James Henry Plowright. — This was an affiliation case, and Mr Matthews, who appeared for the plaintiff, asked that it might be postponed to allow it to be arranged out of court. The case was accordingly postponed by mutual consent for one week.[2]

A week later the case had been settled, presumably by the parents of James Henry Plowright agreeing to adopt the child:

AVOCA POLICE COURT. Monday, July 4th, 1881. Before W. Goodshaw, Esq., J.P.
E. A. Cooke v. J. H. Plowright. — Mr Matthews, for the plaintiff, stated that the case (adjourned from last court) had been settled.[3]

Frederick married Emily Grace Dixon on 30 January 1907 in South Melbourne, Victoria. They were married at Napier Street according to the rites of the Congregational Church. The witnesses were Mary Ann Dixon and Ethel Plowright. Frederick was a butcher living at 216 Albert Road, Albert Park. Emily was a dressmaker living at South Melbourne.[4] They had three children during their marriage.

He died on 2 June 1929 at St Vincent's Hospital, Fitzroy, Victoria, at the age of 48.[5]

He was buried on 4 June 1929 at the New Melbourne General Cemetery, Fawkner, Victoria, in Methodist Compartment D Grave 689.
