Biography

Samuel was born in Carlton cum Willingham, Cambridgeshire, England in 1772 he was named after his deceased brother who was born about two years earlier. Samuel was baptised at Carlton cum Willingham on July 12, 1772.[1] He was the son of John Plumb and Elizabeth Benson . Samuel married Rose Ashman at St. James, Bury St. Edmunds on October 9, 1796[2] and they had 8 children. We know from a Settlement Certificate that the family moved to Soham in 1800. Samuel died at Soham, Cambridgeshire, England in 1823 .[3]

Research Notes

  • Although the marriage record gives Rose's name as Ashfield it is an error it should be Ashman, this is clear from sources on her profile.
  • There was a Samuel Plumb who died in 1858, he was the same age as Samuel, but as Rose was a widow in 1847 it is clearly not his record. I therefore accept the date on Phyl's transcription even though I have not been able to verify it online. The same applies to the Settlement Certificate, but as the children were all born in Soham I have no reason to doubt it.
  • I deleted some ancestry sources because they were not explicit and the links did not work. 6/3/22

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:

This couple probably married in Suffolk because that was where Rose was born, but Samuel may have been living there previously too, without more research I can't be certain it is the same Samuel Plumb but he seems the most likely one.
How do you know that this is the correct information? There is a Samuel Plumb born abt 1772 in the 1851 census born in Carlton, living with his son John (b abt 1815) in Burrough Green

I am not clear why he would move to Suffolk to marry? There are other potential marriage records, Joanna Mingay (1794) and Elizabeth Elsdon (1797) both on Burrough Green which is fairly close to Carlton.
