Joseph was born to Irish immigrant parents, and the family eventually settled in Brooklyn, where he married the daughter of English immigrants in about 1893. Unfortunately, the couple suffered the loss of two children before his wife also died in September 1908. Always having earned a meager living as a manual laborer, he gave away the infant daughter his wife left behind to his sister Kate (Plunkett) Jackson, who eventually adopted the girl. He died at the relatively young age of 56 from acute cardiac dilatation due to chronic interstitial nephritis and pancarditis.
