Biography

There's a wide range for his birth, based on 3 censuses: 1) born 1780-1790, 2) born 1780 or 3) born 1773. His unsourced death record implies born in 1769. For now, using DOB as 1775.

His wife Dicey was born in South Carolina circa 1778.

John entered service for the War of 1812 in Anson County, North Carolina where he served in Capt. Benjamin Lanier's Company of the North Carolina Militia. [1] Sometime between 1815 and 1820 they moved to Hickman County, Tennessee, where they would live the remaining years of their lives.

A John Plunkett Petitioned the US House of Representatives' (30th Congress, 1st Session, Journal Page 685, December 1847) with a Private Claim. It was referred to the Claims Committee and appears in Volume 3, He was asking compensation for injuries received in United States arsenal in North Carolina. (Is this our man??)

A source is needed for his death July 5, 1861, in Centerville Tennessee, aged 92.

Research Notes

Note: It's possible his father wasJames Plunkett Sr. b circa 1744 [1] More research of South Carolina records might make this more definitive

Believed to also have had a daughter named Eliza born 1814 in NC, who married Stephen Skelton Rodgers.

Some ancestry trees say his name is John Balwin Plunkett. that his wife is Dicey Vineyard and that he is the father of Ellison Plunkett. The attached 1830 census for a John Plunkett shows Edward Stringer (uncle to Ellison Plunkett's wife) on the previous page. However, at this time sources have not been found to support these assertions.

Need sources for the ancestry.com trees that say his wife was Dicea (Dicy) Vineyard, born Jan 12 1778 in St Philips Parish, Charleston, SC ,,,, also married in SC according to "Georgia Genealogical Magazine, No. 70.... Dicey reportedly died April 19, 1881 (but this date is suspicious because the ancestry trees also say her marriage was April 19, 1814.... even though she reportedly had a daughter in 1803)
