"Poindexter, A Norman Family", gives year of birth as c 1734. Poindexter Family History says about 1732, but says the same year for older brother John.

One of the bequests of the will of John Poindexter who married Christian, was 200 acres on Golden Mine Creek & a slave named Leander to son William - later William and wife Margaret deeded 100 acres of land on Goldmine Creek to John Poindexter. In 1771, William Poindexter of Trinity Parish was listed as owning a slave Leander. Solid evidence that William who married Margaret was a son of John and Christian Poindexter.

Louisa County Order Book 1766-1772 pg 344 - 13 Nov 1769 - An indenture of Bargain and Sale between Benjamin Henslee and William Anglin of the one part and William Poindexter of the other part was proved by the oaths of Geoarge Kersy and Jon Higgason two of the witnesses thereto, and ordered to be certified. And Elizabeth, wife of the said Benjamin and Ann the wife of the said William (being first privily examined as the law directs) relinquishing all there right and title of Dower of, in, or to the lands and appurtenances in the said Indenture Mentioned.

Meriwether Lewis (August 18, 1774 – October 11, 1809) was an American explorer, soldier, politician, and public administrator, best known for his role as the leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, also was the 2nd Governor of Louisiana Territory.

It was President Thomas Jefferson who chose General David Meriwether's neighbor and cousin Meriwether Lewis to lead the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

William is the grandnephew of Elizabeth Crawford, wife of Nicholas Meriwether Jr. (1667 - 1744). Nicholas amassed a large quantity of land, at one point owning about 33,000 acres. Nicholas was, if not the largest land owner in Virginia, among the largest owners. In 1735 he built his plantation, which became "The Farm" in Goochland (now Albemarle) County, the site of which is now the city of Charlottesville, Virginia. His will, one of the longest recorded in Virginia, was witnessed by Peter Jefferson, father of Thomas Jefferson.
