Biography

Category: South Carolina, Immigrants from France

Pierre Poinsett was born in Soubise, Saintonge, France and died on Oct. 25, 1699 in Charleston, South Carolina. He married Sara Poinsett Fouchereau. Sara was born in Soubise, Saintonge, France and died in 1685 in Soubise, Saintonge, France.

Pierre "Peter" Poinsett, Jr. and Sara Fouchereau emigrated to America with his brother Jean. Pierre is said to have been in “Charles towne” South Carolina by 1681 (Oliveros, 1980). However, there is this entry in The Registers of the French Church, Threadneedle Street, London, Vol. 111, 1906. "Chevalier, Jean, natif de S. Georges de Didonne en Xaintonge, fils de feu Jean Chevalier et de feue Jeanne de Ramet; Catherine Poinset, native de Soubise, fille de Pierre Poinset et de Sara Fouchereau. Mai 15 -- Epousez le 22e Juin, 1687.”

Also, there is a "Peter Poincet and Sarah, his wife" listed for 10 July 1696 in the Letters of Denization and Acts of Naturalization for Aliens in England and Ireland, 1603 -1700; “Peter” presumably is “Pierre” Anglicized. Thus, Pierre ethier arrived later than 1681 in "Charles towne” or else left daughter Catherine behind in England.

Peter, as he came to be known, opened a small place of entertainment at the n.e. corner of Church and Queen streets. Peter later moved to a more commodious house at the s.e. corner of Church and Elliot streets, as may be seen in Crisp's map of Charleston in 1704.

Tradition has it that the South Carolina Society originated with some of Peter Poinsett's friends who met in this house to favor his undertaking. (However, it should be noted that Pierre died in 1699, so if the property on Crisp's map of 1704 was still in Poinsett hands it would have been those of one of his four children, likely son Peter.

Also, as North and South Carolina were not formed until 1713, the South Carolina Society story would have transpired in the time of the second generation of Charleston Poinsetts.)

Among the court records for Charles towne for 17 and 18 June 1692 is an account of Peter Poynsett being awarded a payment of 4 pounds and 10 shillings current money of Carolina by Seth Sothell 19 for extorting money from him and three other men on pretense of licensing them to retail liquor.

As noted above, Pierre was a signatory to the act of 1696, naturalizing him and securing his property. Pierre died 25 Oct 1699 in Charles Town. {https://books.google.com/books?id=tEkUAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA266&lpg=PA266&dq=Jean+John+Poinsett&source=bl&ots=amzeTUyvve&sig=6Adx3Xq8uM34WuzYuiiu5GIOEE8&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiCxYe0qObTAhVO3mMKHSJjCfsQ6AEIUzAJ#v=onepage&q=Jean%20John%20Poinsett&f=false Collections of the South-Carolina Historical Society, Volume 1]
