Biography

Fidèle was born on 20 July 1826 and baptized in Grande-Digue on 5 Aug 1826. He is the son of Simon Poirier and Henriette Arsenault. [1][2][3] At age 31 he married 34 year old Nathalie Landry, widow of Hilaire LeBlanc, in Grande-Digue on 27 Apr 1858. She was the daughter of Benjamin Landry and Perpétue Cormier. [4][5] At age 42 he married Osithe Maillet in Saint-Louis de Kent on 7 July 1868. [6] He passed away at age 77 in Shediac on 10 Aug 1903.[7]

  • À partir de 1851 il fut colporteur pendant quatre ans et huit mois dans toutes les provinces maritimes. Il vendait divers produits religieux, domestiques et agricoles. (livres religieux, mitaines, avoine, etc) En 1856 il construit un magasin en face de la maison de son père et devient (selon plusieurs monographies) le premier commerçant acadien de Shediac. Dans les années 1870, il loue une scierie à vapeur à Bouctouche qui emploie 25 hommes et scie 25000 billots par année. Il expédie ce bois de construction vers les marchés étrangers. Pendant les années 1880 ses commerces dépérissent et il ne s'occupe que de l'importation de la mélasse des Barbades. Vers la fin de sa vie il s'associe avec son fils Auguste pour fonder un commerce sous le nom de Fidèle Poirier et Fils. [8]
