Biography

Marie-Françoise Poirier was born around 1648.[1] She was the daughter of Jean Poirier and Jeanne Chebrat.

Around 1668, Marie-Françoise married Roger dit Jean Caissie. Between 1669 and 1697, she gave birth to seven children:[1]

  1. Marie Caissie
  2. Jean Cassie
  3. Pierre Caissie
  4. Guillaume Caissie
  5. Michel Caissie
  6. Madeleine Caissie
  7. Marie Anne Caissy

Roger, a ploughman 25 years of age, and Marie, 22 years of age, were listed in the 1671 census of Port-Royal with their daughter Marie age 2. They owned 3 cattle and 2 sheep, but no cultivated land.[2]

In March of 1682 the family obtained land in the fertile area of Beaubassin[3]

The family was among the first settlers there. Their homestead was on a hill that bears her husband's name.la butte à Roger.

In 1686, at Chiqnitou dit Beaubassin, Marie POIRIER, aged 35, was living with her husband, Roger QUESSY, aged 35, and their five children: Marie, aged 16, Jean, aged 10, Pierre, aged 8, Guillaume, aged 6 and Michel, aged 1 1/2. The family owned 2 guns and was living on 8 arpents of cultivable land with 18 cattle, 6 sheep, and 8 hogs.[4]

The family seemed to be doing well there. For example, in 1693, they owned 26 cattle, 32 sheep, 23 pigs, 16 arpents of cultivated land and 3 guns. [5] In 1698, 4 arpents of land with 30 fruit trees were counted.[6] It is said that Roger was the first to introduce fruit trees to the region.[7]

The family appeared in the subsequent censuses between 1700 and 1714.[8][9][10][11][12]

Marie Françoise passed away after the census of 1714.

DNA. Marie Françoise's mother was Jeanne Chebrat. The Mothers of Acadia Maternal DNA project is conducting ongoing research to verify their origins. In 2010, Stephen White reported that Jeanne Chebrat had an HV* haplogroup. Ongoing test results are also reported here. As of December 2019, 6 descendants have reported an HV haplogroup, indicating European origins.

Research Notes

In the original 1686 census at Chiqnitou dit Beaubassin, Marie 16 was transcribed as only 16. Caissie was written as Quessy.[13]
