Biography
Napoleon grew up in New York.
The following was written by Thelma Belle Poland Short Young in 1982:
"Napoleon and Jeanette moved to Guthrie, Oklahoma from Kingman County, Kansas, and in 1893 he was one of the early settlers who was in the "liine-up" to make "the run" to file claim to as much property as he was able to get. He ran from Orlando, Oklahoma to his claim. The government gave the land called the Cherokee Strip to the white settlers. The people lined up in a straight line, some on horse back, some in wagons with their families with them. A gun was fired for a signal to start. Grandpa filed claim on 180 acres which he homesteaded and lived on it until grandmother died in 1918. (I remember this all very well.)
"I was nine years old when grandmother died. The name of the township was Ceres, Oklahoma (pronounced like Sears). Grandpa married again, the second time about 1930 or 1931 I believe. He then (after this marriage) moved to Wichita, Kansas, where he died. I thought he was the sweetest grandfather in the world and always thought he was the handsomest. He looked like General Pershing, a general during World War I.
"I have a couple lf pictures of him and I have a couple of my mother and a snapshot of the 2 story brick house in upper state New York where Grandpa lived as a little boy. The house is still standing and looks as if someone still lives in it."
His residence at the time of his death was 1812 Arkansas Avenue.
