Biography

Richard was the son of Peter Poling and Hannah Barnett. Richard was born about 1782, probably in the area of Georges Creek, Allegany County, Maryland. His parents had left Loudoun County, Virginia around 1780 and by 1787 had settled on Lot #3859 in Allegany County, Maryland.

The first record of Richard is his marriage to Rachel Poling on 22 July 1802 by Rev. John Patterson in Monongalia County, Virginia. Rachel was the daughter of Martin C. and Lettice Ann Poling. The Martin C. Poling family lived in Monongalia County, Virginia a short time after their return from the disappointing effort to establish a home in Ohio.

On 22 August 1809, John Hoye sold three tracts of land on Teters Creek, part of a bigger 520 acre tract, to Richard Poling, Martin D. Poling and Peter Poling their father. No Deed was requested at that time.

Richard is next found in the 1810 Census Record of Randolph County, Virginia where he has 2 males under the age of 10 and one female under the age of 10. His wife is not listed. From the 1820 Census, it's likely that the female was his wife but put in the wrong age group.

Richard is next found in the 1820 Census where he now has 7 sons, two daughters under 10 and a wife also indicated.

On 20 January 1823, Robert Troup of Ontario Co., NY, by his attorney, sold to Richard Poland of Randolph Co., VA, 94 acres of land on the North side Brushy Fork. The land bordered a John Heeters and a Walter.

On 15 June 1826, the land that Peter, Richard and Martin D had purchased in 1809 was divided between Martin D. Poling and Elisha Poling, sons of Peter, and Richard's part went to Samuel Stalnaker.

No Death Record of Richard has been found. However, it appears that he probably died in 1847 since the 1848 Tax Record indicates his wife was now a Widow. The 1850 Census shows several of his children's families, with Rachel in the household of Isaac.

On 10 June 1854, Barnett P. Poling and wife Hannah, Isaac Poling and wife Ellender, Stephen Poling and wife Elizabeth heirs at law of Richard Poling dec'd sell to Martin E. Poling their undivided interest in the 94 acres of land on Brushy Fork that belonged to Richard Poling when he died.

On 22 Feb 1861 John W. Smith and wife Lettice Jane of Noble Co., OH sold to Harrison Poling of Noble Co., OH, all their interest in 94 acres of the Richard Poling Farm on Brushy Fork of Teters Creek, the farm now occupied by Barnett Poling. Lettice Jane was the daughter of John Poling dec'd who had a share in the farm, that interest descending to her.

On 22 May 1867 Wm. H Poling and wife Rachel of Barbour Co., WV sold to Elias Auvil their one share of the Richard Poling farm containing 13.5 acres, that share being deeded to them by John W. smith and Lettis Jane his wife. [William Harrison is the son of Barnett P. Poling.]

On 17 June 1867, Richard Poling and wife Elizabeth, John Poling and wife Ose and Dennis D. Miller and wife Sarah, formerly Sarah Poling, heirs of Peter Poling dec'd who was heir at law of Richard Poling dec'd, sold to Elias Auvil all their undivided interest in 91 acres on Brushy Fork. It is the same land that belonged to Richard Poling when he died and to which Peter as heir was entitled to 1/7 part. Richard and his wife were in Marion County, West Virginia. John Poling and wife Ose and Dennis D Miller and wife Sarah were in Brown County, Indiana.
