Biography

Benjamin Poling was born about 1827 in Randolph County, Virginia. He was the son of Martin B. Poling and Mary Wilson. 'Note: The Birth Date is an estimate. His Death Record says 1823 and Census Records are from 1822 to 1832. 1850 Census says 1827 and is consistent with his occurrence in Personal Property Tax Records.

A Marriage Record for Benjamin Poling has not been found. His wife's name was Catherine. Her last name is believed to be Shaffer based on Census Records showing them living as Tenants on a farm with Stingley Shafer. Benjamin and Catherine were probably married about 1850 in Barbour County, Virginia. Based on Census Records, they had the following children.

  3. Waitman T W 1861-

On 3 May 1887, the heirs of Martin B. Poling sold to Benjamin and his wife Catherine the land Willed to them by their father Martin B. Poling, dec'd. The land was then partitioned according to agreements made and Benjamin ended up with 30 acres. The rest went to Harvey Poling and Samuel Woods.

On 9 December 1889, Benjamin and his wife Catherine sold 8 of those acres to Harvey Poling. The land was on the East side of the Valley River about one mile above the Town of Philippi.

On 15 June 1890, Benjamin and his wife Catherine sold their remaining land to Richard Collins with the stipulation that Benjamin and his wife could stay in their present home at no charge until 1 November 1892. The Deed was delivered 6 January 1893.

Benjamin is next found in the 1900 Census in Hocking County, Ohio. He is widowed and is living next to his sister, Ann Swearingen. Benjamin's son Stingley is 6 households away.

Benjamin passed away in the County Infirmary in 1911.
