Biography

  • Wilhelmina was born in 1893 in Chicago, Illinois.[1][2] Family tree suggests middle name “Mariana.”[3]
  • She died in 1976 in Kāneʻohe, Hawaiʻi.[1][2]

Sketch

Affectionately known as "Minnie" or "Billie" to her friends and, later in life, as “Mums" to her immediate family, Wilhelmina Pollack was born in 1893 in Chicago, Illinois, to parents Julius Pollack and Catherine Petertyl. She excelled with the violin, and was selected to travel across the country with a symphonic group at an unusually early age. She married Ferris Finley Laune, and they had two daughters, Kathryn Marie and Mary Louise.
Her husband's work in prison social work and community service led the family to Hawaiʻi, where Ferris had been offered a job as Executive Secretary of the Council of Social Agencies, housed at the Palama Settlement Community Center in Honolulu. Wilhelmina played a violin she made herself (the first woman ever to do so) with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra for 25 years, and did her part as a USO volunteer during World War II.
Both she and Ferris were active with the Czech Club for some 25 years, and she was fluent in the language. They sold their Waikiki home at 2241 Ala Wai Blvd. in order to move to the family beach house at Kawela Bay. In 1967, they moved to Kāneʻohe to be closer to family and live out their remaining years..

She is my Great Aunt. My dad went to visit her after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. My dad, John Pollack was in the Army being sent to Guam, via Hawaii, the stop allowed him to see his Aunt. The stories he told of her seeing bullet casings drop from the sky!
