Gustave Pollard has English ancestors.

Gustave as a young man was a Cobb & Co driver and somewhat an adventurer. At one stage he owned his own transport routes around Denilquin , Moama and Mathoura. He became successful financially and owned shops a hotel, one of the first cars in the district and a fine home.

A hotel in Mathoura which he owned was extensively damaged by fire. The Hotel was rebuilt. However Gustave had to hand it over to his creditors in 1918. He finally lost all his money in 1926 when also left his wife and youngest child who moved to Melbourne to live with relatives.

By 1954 Gustave was a taxi driver in Melbourne, estranged from many of his family.
