He is the son of Ricahard Pollard and Paulina Rives. Graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1849. In 1851, he went to China, and engaged in the silk trade for nine years, going to India, Siam, Philippine Isles, Australia, Chili, Peru, Mexico, California, Sandwich Isles, Egypt, and Abyssinia.
