Gladys was born in 1904 in Acocks Green, Birmingham. Her parents doted on her as she was their only surviving child, her other siblings, which included twins perished either at birth or were stillborn[1]. Gladys recalls the poverty in the area at that time and that she was the only child in her street to have shoes.

In 1929 she married Alfred Benting at Birmingham Register Office and they had five children together. Sadly, in 1939 two of the children and Alfred died during the year. Gladys remarried in 1941, her second husband was her first husbands younger brother Thomas Benting and they had one child together, born in 1942.

During World War II Gladys moved from Acocks Green with the remaining children to live in the relative safety of rural Shropshire, living with, and later nearby to, her in-laws.

Gladys and Tom moved from Overley to Wrockwardine and then on to the nearby town of Wellington. Living first in Heath Road and then as Tom’s health deteriorated to a bungalow in Parklands. In the family bible she wrote my dear Tom died May 11th 1978.

For many, many years Gladys kept a regular diary and following the death of her mother in 1927 she became the keeper of her family bible in which she recorded all the births, marriages and deaths of her own family unit. Gladys passed away in 1993 in Wellington[2]

In the early 1990s Gladys gave Yvonne Benting many details about the family history as well as family photographs and on her death Gladys bequeathed her wedding ring and the family bible to Yvonne.
