Harry Pollard was born on 23 Jan 1879, in Republic City, Kansas. He was the youngest of five children born to John Benson and Malinda (Van Arsdale) Pollard. The family moved to California in about 1889. He attended school in Fresno, California, before joining the American Stock Company in San Francisco.
In the earliest years of motion picture, Harry became associated with the American Film Company of Santa Barbara before moving to Hollywood.
He was married to silent film actress Margarita Fischer, 9 Jul 1911. They divorced, but were remarried in 1928.
In 1916, he switched to a directing career in 1916. As a director, his most notable films include Show Boat, The Southerner, The Quest (1915), Sporting Youth (1924), Tonight at Twelve (1929), and When a Feller Needs a Friend with Jackie Cooper. Notoriously, he also directed starred in blackface in the title role of Uncle Tom's Cabin (1927).
Harry died on 6 Jul 1934 of heart disease at a sanitarium in Pasadena, California. He was 55 years old. He is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.
