William was born in Ohio in about 1842, probably the son of James Pollock and Jane Sinclair (to confirm). His family moved a couple of years later and settled in the Sparta area in Noble County, Indiana where William grew up. At the age of 19, William joined the Union Army and served three years in the Civil War in Company C of the 30th Indiana Infantry, After the war, he returned to Noble County where he married Sarah Isabel Knight in 1865. They remained in the Sparta area where they had four children together. The couple's marriage ended at some point during the 1870s and by 1880, Isabel had remarried and three children were living with her. Meanwhile, William had moved to the Jefferson area in Dickinson County, Kansas by 1880 where his brother John had settled. William worked as a farm laborer and peddlar. William lived in the area for several years, and was an active member of the local Grand Army of the Republic Post in Banner, Kansas. He returned to live in Indiana and Ohio, seeking medical care at the Volunteer Soldiers Home in Dayton, Ohio and Marion, Indiana from 1890. He may have tried a stint at farming in Georgia in the late 1890s based on a 1900 census record. He was back in the Ohio-Indiana area for medical care by 1902. In Marion, he married Sarah Elizabeth Young née Counts in 1909, and lived for a while with her and her daughter there. The marriage does not appear to have lasted as he spent more time in the Volunteer Soldiers Home, reporting himself as widowed. He died at the Dayton Home in 1920 and is buried in the Dayton National Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio.

Research notes
The case for William being the son of James and Jane and growing up in the Sparta area of Indiana is based both on location and his marriage there, but also given the age relation to his brother John, who was 2 years older, and who he joined in Kansas for several years. The link to John in Kansas is confirmed by the matching references to his Civil War unit and his marital status as divorced.
