This is NOT the same Richard as Richard Pomeroy-181. Please do not request a merge. See the information on the links below for work that has been done, genealogy and DNA.

According to Anderson, the ancestry beyond Richard Pomeroy remains unknown. In 1914, Elizabeth French disproved the genealogy previously recorded by Albert A. Pomeroy [1]

A. A. Pomeroy (1923 Vol III) then suggested that Eltweed might descend from Henry's brother, John. "Alive in 1531." No further record". (Speculation only.)

"Eltweed's father Richard is the problem. Alma LaFrance and I have researched extensively and yet we cannot establish where his father Richard attaches to the family tree.

The Pomeroy Family Association's FTDNA YDNA study confirms a YDNA signature for Eltweed Pomeroy's descendants, and places them within a larger Genetic Group, suggesting a family line with earlier UK origins in Brixham, Devon, prior to 1495.

In going through each image of the Symondsbury, Dorset records, page by page, we note THREE Pomeroy Burials in 1611-1612.

1. 1611: February 23rd: (Old Style) Buried was JOAN Pomery, the wife of Richard Pomery.

2. 1612: April 12th, (Old Style) Buried, ELINOR Pomery, the wife of Richard Pomery alias Wrixon. (Old style means Elinor was buried two months after Joan.)

On Filmstrip 46:

3. 1612: 3rd of February, (Old Style)Buried, RICHARD Pomeroy.

This is where it gets complicated. C.A.Hoppin. (1923 History and Genealogy of the Pomeroy Family) made the connection based upon an assumption, not supported by fact. We cannot accept his reasoning that the burial of Richard Pomeroy in 1612 in Symondsbury explains the absence of any record of Richard Pomeroy or his wife at Beaminster after 1612. Nor can we accept that Elinor, wife of Richard Pomeroy alias Wrixon, buried 1612 was the mother of Eltwid. Nor can we accept that Joan, wife of Richard Pomeroy was mother of Eltwid.

Furthermore, only one Richard Pomeroy was recorded as being buried in Symondsbury in the period covered by the Dorset Parish Registers. 1538-1821.

Biography

The suggestion that the spouse of Richard, father of Eltweed, was named Mary came from genealogy rebuttal research published in the NEHGA in the 1920’s. This suggestion is repeated on the APHGA site. There is no basis for that assumption in the records.

The spouse of Richard Pomeroy, father of Eltwid Pomeroy, is unknown.

I left this message on Pomeroy-181:

I am a descendant of Elizabeth (m. Harris) daughter of Henry Pomeroy and Agnes Huckmore (12x gg) who are also shown as the grandparents of Eltweed Pomeroy in the pedigree diagram attached (to Pomeroy-181) . As of today I have 20 DNA matches with Ancestry members whose lineage takes them back to Eltweed so I am so I am inclineed to believe there is a fairly close link

Ancestry DNA is autosomal which is only good for about 6 generations, not enough to get back to Eltweed. I would look for other connections to these 20 people. Y DNA is good for more generations and studies have been done by the Pomeroys in England to group Pomeroys. Check out the Pomeroy Name study.
