Biography

Henry de Pomeria inherited the feudal barony of Berry Pomeroy in Devon and also significant lands in France from his father, Goscelin de Pomeria. Father and son seem to have worked together for some years during the so-called anarchy. There is no evidence of which side he took during that period, but he did well when Henry II finally became king.[1]

Henry married Rohese who was a sister of Reginald, Earl of Cornwall, and illegitimate son of King Henry I. (Her father may also have been the king, or else she may have only shared Reginald's mother Sybil, and been a daughter instead of Herbert fitz Herbert who married her.[2])

Henry de La Pomerai and Rohese had at least the following children:[3]

  • Henry de la Pomerai "the younger" who was born before 1145/6 and died 1194. He married Mathilde de Viteri and had a son Henry. He died while participating in a rebellion led by the future King John. He was in charge of the family lands by 1167.
  • Joscelin de la Pomerai. Living 1177, 1205. He also had a son named Henry.

In France, a notification of Henry bishop of Bayeux, dated 1167, states that Henry de la Pommeraye had in his presence confirmed the gifts of his father Joscelin to the abbey of Le Val-Notre-Dame, and had renounced all rights over the churches of Saint-Omer, Benoeil, Angoville, Le Bo, Cosseville, Saint-Clair, La Pommeraye and Placy; and all these places lie within 8 kil. of La Pommeraye (Calvados). By a charter dated 1125 Goslin de Pomeria gave the church of Le Val to the canons there; he also gave them rents in Berry Pomeroy with the church and tithe. Le Val is in the commune of St-Omer adjacent to La Pommeraye; the abbey was founded on the fee of Richard de Tornebu, who assented to Joscelin's gift; and Tronebu is 9 kil. North of La Pommeraye.

Here is an archived version of the Celtic Casimir page: https://web.archive.org/web/20140902122601/http://www.celtic-casimir.com/webtree/6/6523.htm Also see the wife and daughter.

It apparently used to cite old versions of MEDLANDS, but even archived versions of the cited pages don't explain the daughter given here. Here are new versions: https://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/ENGLAND,%20Kings%201066-1603.htm https://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/enguntdk.htm#_Toc36368843 The daughter also does not appear in Powley, Edward B.. The house of de la Pomerai which is available on Ancestry.com

Andrew, looking at the changes, it looks like Darrell perhaps used celtic-casimir which no longer seems to exist. I did locate the information at FMG & will add the link.
The Medlands citation is not done properly, but I wonder if most of the text comes from there?
