George Pomeroy (surname spelled "Pumery," "Pumrey," and "Pumroy" in contemporary records) was born circa 1710 traditionally in Ireland. He arrived in America in about 1730. He was in Nottingham Township, Pennsylvania, for a short while before he settled near Roxbury, Pennsylvania. He was buried near Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, in Middle Spring Cemetery. He made his will 5 Oct. 1773, and his will was proved November 6, 1776.[1] He married Margaret --- and she died in 1777 at the house of her son, Col. John Pomeroy. George and Margaret had nine children. [2]
NOTE: The sources and references for the birth and parents of George Pumery of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, found in numerous online family trees are from a compiled genealogy published in the mid 20th century. This is a compiled genealogy which contains in part what must be considered fabrications. While good documentation and research went into discovering the origins of George Pumery who died in 1776, the compiler failed at two crucial points.
1. There never was a Samuel Pomeroy in the family of Edward Pomeroy (d. 1656) and Wilmot Periman, (D. 1661). Placing Lt. Samuel Pomeroy of Pallice, Ireland, as son of Edward Pomeroy and Wilmot, his wife, in Brixham, was a genealogical fabrication. The noted Irish genealogist, Margaret Falley, provided a lot of detail and sources, but in the end, could only SUGGEST that Sir Betham may have had a tentative, but hatched out line, between Lt. Samuel Pomeroy and Edward Pomeroy of Brixham, based upon something he MAY have read in Samuel's will; which will she did not see.
2. Thomas Holmes-Pomeroy, the son of William Holmes and Martha Pomeroy, daughter of Lt. Samuel Pomeroy, mentioned in his will that his son George Holmes, was dead. Thomas Holmes-Pomeroy and his wife Andriah called their sons Holmes-Pomeroy indicating they were heirs and representatives of Lt. Samuel Pomeroy. There is no evidence that George Pumery of Pensylvania ever used the second surname of "Holmes."
The early family tradition of George Pumery of Pennsylvania at no point includes mention of the Holmes family.
Most conclusively, the male-line descendants of George Pumery/Pomeroy have been shown by DNA testing to have a Y chromosome (Pomeroy DNA Project Haplogroup R-M269 Mode 06e PA1745) that is relatively close to the Y chromosome of the Eltweed Pomeroy family (Pomeroy DNA Project Haplogroup R-M269 Mode 06b Beaminster 1617: (Eltwid)). Thus, George Pumeroy had a direct male-line ancestor in common with Eltweed Pomeroy -- their male-line ancestries must join up at some unknown point in the Middle Ages.[3] But if George Pumery were the same as George Holmes-Pomeroy, then his descendants would have had a Holmes Y chromosome rather than a Pomeroy Y chromosome.[4]
"Conclusions should be open to change when new information and evidence becomes available; therefore, care should be taken to properly evaluate the work of a researcher or author who did their best in earlier times to make family connections when they had limited information in front of them. Be grateful for and embrace the information they accurately preserved and correct inaccuracies as new information arises."

Family tradition current among George's descendants is that George was born somewhere in Ireland of a family that had come to Ireland from Britain at some unknown point. It was George Holmes Pomeroy who was born circa 1709 in Pallas, County Cork. George Pumery's exact place of birth is unknown. His approximate year of birth, circa 1710, is calculated from the approximate year of his marriage, circa 1730.
